On Oct. 9, the Mark Garwood SHARE Foundation hosted its fourth annual Shoot for the Moon Sporting Clays Competition at the South Florida Shooting Club in Palm City.
The event raises funds for the Foundation’s Phoenix Scholarship program, which over the past six years has awarded more than $185,000 in educational grants to 32 local men and women who are battling back from the effects of substance use disorder.1 The scholarships go to individuals working to get their lives back on track, are actively involved in structured recovery programs, and wanting to initiate or resume their education. For the second year, Shoot for the Moon was presented and sponsored by Audi Stuart, Infiniti Stuart, Maserati of Stuart and Alfa Romeo Stuart. 2 A total of more than 175 attendees, including 124 participants in the shoot, enjoyed one of the first non-virtual fundraising events since the onset of the pandemic. U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, Martin County Commissioner Ed Ciampi, State Rep. Toby Overdorf, State Rep. John Snyder, Stuart Commissioner Troy McDonald, Captain John Budenseik of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, and past Mark Garwood SHARE Foundation Phoenix Scholarship recipients were in attendance. The outdoor venue, following of CDC guidelines, and cooperation of all attendees ensured a safe experience for all. Trophies were awarded for team competition and individual scores. Winning teams were from Cleveland Clinic/Martin Health, HBKS Wealth Management, and Wilmington Trust, in that order.3 Highest overall score for men went to Andy Duffy and, for women, to Carolyn Smith. Activities included continental breakfast sponsored by Mingace Custom Audio and BBQ lunch provided by Martin County Sheriff’s Office “Grill Team” and sponsored by Sheltair Aviation Services. The highlight of the event was the awarding of seven 2021 Phoenix Scholarships. Recipients of the $5,000 grants (which must be used for educational purposes) were Katherine Hovey, Lorraine De Amicis, Amber Scott, Niki Tartal, Dominique Bartko, Russell Wetjen, and Karen Reese.4 For more about the Mark Garwood SHARE Foundation, visit markgarwoodsharefoundation.org.
